Slow Living…

Pottery has taught me to slow down. My craft demands patience and a slow methodical approach to making and designing. You can’t rush clay, it needs to be made with care, and dry slowly.

I wasn’t always a naturally patient person, but I have definitely learnt to take a breath, pause and approach life in a different way since discovering ceramics.

Slow living is a catch phrase at the moment, and it can sometime sound impractical when life, family and work are all swirling around us at a frenzied pace.

The slow living movement is a response to this fast-paced, consumer-driven culture that often leaves us feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, and unsatisfied. At its core, slow living encourages a more mindful, intentional approach to life, focusing on quality over quantity, savoring experiences, and embracing a simpler, more sustainable way of living.

One of the key aspects of slow living is a heightened appreciation for handcrafted objects, such as the small batch ceramics that I have such a passion for creating. These items are made with care and attention to detail that can sometimes seems increasingly rare in our mass-produced world. Here's why being surrounded by handcrafted objects can be so fulfilling:

  1. Authenticity: Handcrafted items carry a sense of authenticity and uniqueness that mass-produced goods lack. Each piece is imbued with personality and the artistry of the maker, making it truly one-of-a-kind.

  2. Connection to the Maker: When you purchase or own a handcrafted object, you're not just buying a product, you're connecting with the person who created it. There's something special about knowing the story behind an item, the hands that shaped it, and the passion that went into its creation.

  3. Quality and Durability: Handcrafted items are typically made with higher-quality materials and greater attention to detail, resulting in products that are built to last. In a world where so much is disposable, investing in well-made, handcrafted pieces can bring a sense of longevity and permanence to your surroundings.

  4. Mindfulness and Slow Consumption: In a culture that often encourages constant consumption and instant gratification, embracing handcrafted objects encourages a more mindful approach to consumption. Rather than buying things on impulse, acquiring handcrafted items requires thoughtfulness, intention, and a willingness to wait for something truly special.

  5. Aesthetic Appeal: Handcrafted objects often have a distinct aesthetic appeal, whether it's the rustic charm of hand-thrown pottery, the intricate beauty of hand-carved woodwork, or the timeless elegance of handmade textiles. Surrounding yourself with these objects can enhance the beauty and atmosphere of your home, creating a space that feels warm, inviting, and personal.

Its a little reminder from me for you to slow down, savor the moment, and appreciate the beauty of the world around you…
